An exhibition displaying 22 paintings by celebrated Vietnamese painters was inaugurated at the Da Nang City Museum on March 29.

The exhibits were among the 238 paintings donated by Japanese collector Itoh Toyokichi to the museum in 2020. He also lent 49 other works of the collection, named “Houei” (Prosperity), to the city for 10 years.
Works on display include paintings by famous Vietnamese painters who graduated from the Indochina College of Fine Arts (now the Vietnam University of Fine Arts) such as Nguyen Gia Tri, Tran Van Can, Tu Duyen, To Lien and Duong Bich Lien, among others.
They have been produced with various themes of natural landscapes, portraits and still life in assorted genres of oil paintings, silk, watercolour, and wood cut prints.
80-year-old Japanese businessman Itoh Toyokichi began collecting works of Vietnamese painters in late 1986 after his trip to Hanoi. He named his collection ‘Houei’ (Prosperity) with the hope to “open a new era of mutual development and prosperity”.
His collection has been exhibited in Japan and the Republic of Korea to promote Vietnam’s historical and cultural values to visitors.
